Joel Salatin editorial: Science is Killing Us

Head over to the Food Democracy blog to read Joel Salatin´s take on how the government is dictating what is and is not safe about the food we eat.

From the article:

Only government food is safe food. Sound science dictates what is
safe. No other standard will do. Only T-bone steaks wrapped in
million-dollar, agriculturally prohibited, quintuple-permitted,
government-sanctioned processing facilities are fit for human
consumption. I cant buy a pound cake from a neighbor girl who whipped
it up and baked it in the family kitchen. Thats not safe. Sound
science has thus decreed.

But Coca-Cola is safe. McDonalds Happy Meals are safe. So is
irradiated food. Genetic engineering is the darling of sound science.
And until just a couple of months ago, sound science decreed that
feeding brains and spinal cords to herbivores was state-of-the-art
technology. Now the denizens of the ivory towers are debating whether
or not to eliminate the feeding of chicken manure and dead chicken
carcasses to herbivores. Rest assured, when the edict comes down from
the powers that be, it will be based on sound science.

1.Urge them to fully fund Local Farms Healthy Kids Senate Bill 6483 and House Bill 2798

2. It is a smart investment!

When local food systems are strengthened, farms are more economically viable, less energy is required to transport food over great distances, and people from all economic classes have greater access to healthy fresh foods. Local Farms Healthy Kids provides an opportunity to improve childrens health while creating new, stable markets for our local farmers. By providing grants to help schools purchase Washington grown fruits and vegetables for school meals, this proposed legislation will help Washington farmers feed Washingtons kids. It will increase sustainable markets for local farmers, get more nutritious foods to kids and families that need it most, and build a stronger connection between schools, kids and farmers.

BACKGROUND: In general, schools are required to make their purchases based on the lowestpriced bid. This includes food purchases which often results in serving cheaper, highly processed foods. By enabling schools to purchase local fresh fruits and vegetable, this legislation will benefit our farmers, promote healthy eating in our children and help build stronger local food systems in our State.

Local Farms Healthy Kids proposal will:

Create more sustainable markets for our local farmers that will help keep farmers farming and help preserve farming communities near our cities and towns.
Expand childrens access to locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables in schools, food stamp programs and food banks.
Ease purchasing restrictions that currently make it difficult for schools and institutions to buy from local farms

Help farmers and kids with a quick phone call. Please call 18005626000 and leave a message asking your legislators to fully fund Local FarmsHealthy Kids.
